Chapter 1 The Science of Biology


-What is Science?

Science is an organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world.

-What is the goal of Science?

The goal of science is to investigate and understand nature, to explain events in nature,
and to use those explanations to make useful predictions.

-How does science start?

It starts with observation, and it involves using one or more senses- sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, to gather information. The information gathered from observation is called evidence, or data.

-Interpreting the evidence?

An observation alone has little meaning in science, because the goal is to understand what was observed. Scientist usually follow observations with inferences. Inference is a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience.

-Explaining the evidence?

A hypothesis is a possible explanation for a set of observations or an answer to a scientific question. It can start as a topic or idea, and its only useful if it can be tested.

Evidence of ovservation?
Ovservations involves one or more of your five senses-sight,smell,touch,hearing and sometimes taste.

-What is biology?

Biology is the science that seeks to understand the living world. A biologist is someone who uses a scientific method to study living things.

-What are the Characteristics of Living Things?

1. Living things are made up of units called cells.
2. Living things reproduce.
3. Living things are based on a universal genetic code.
4. Living things grow and develop.
5. Living things obtain and use materials and energy.
6. Living things respond to their environment.
7. Living things maintain a stable internal environment.
8. Taken as a group, living things change over time.

-What are cells?

A cell is a collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings.

-In Science, what is a theory?

A theory is a well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations.

-What is metabolism?

The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes is called metabolism.

- What is homeostasis?

Homeostastis is the process by which organisms keep their internal conditions relatively stable. An example, is a plant. They may take in water at one time and give off water at another. It may need large amounts of energy at one moment and have extra energy to store at another. he process of homeostasis makes it so an organism can maintain a fairly constant body temperature.


Although organisms go through many changes in their lives, the basic traits they inherited they inherited from their parents usually don't change. Any kind of organism can evolve, or change over time.
- The steps to designing an experiment:
1.Stating the problem
2. Forming a hypothesis
3. Setting up a controlled experiment
4. Recording and analyzing results
5. Drawing a conclusion

-The metric system:

Because researchers need to replicate their experiments and most involve measurements, scientists need a common system of measurement.
